WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK

More Oscar winners and nominees (LES MISERABLES, THE IMPOSSIBLE, PARANORMAN), Tom Cruise back in action in JACK REACHER and a gritty take on the classic WUTHERING HEIGHTS hits the screen at the Film Group this week.

• Thu 21 Mar @ 8 PM: THE IMPOSSIBLE

Naomi Watts (in her Oscar-nominated role) and Ewan McGregor star in the astonishing true story of a family torn apart by the mayhem of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

• Fri 22 Mar @ 8 PM: JACK REACHER followed by WUTHERING HEIGHTS

Tom Cruise stars as an ex-military investigator tasked with clearing the name of a sniper in JACK REACHER, the first film based on the hit novels by Lee Child. Then, check out an unconventionally gritty take on Emily Brontë’s classic novel in WUTHERING HEIGHTS.

• Sat 23 Mar @ **7 PM**: PARANORMAN followed by LES MISERABLES

The Oscar-nominated stop-motion animated PARANORMAN kicks off the night at 7 PM with the tale of a misunderstood young boy who can speak to the dead. Then, Hugh Jackman leads an all-star cast as a convict deciding to start a new life in 19th-century revolutionary France in the triple Oscar-winning musical LES MISERABLES at 8:45 PM.

Oscar Week at the Film Group

With four of this year's Best Picture nominees in a row, we can't think of a better time to join up if you haven't already done so!

Most of this week's films are 'No Guests' screenings too, so if you have friends who wish to come along, don't forget that we also have Weekly Memberships for sale. They cost only $15 and provides entry into all films a week from the date of purchase. Fantastic value for a fantastic week of films!

Without further ado, here's the line-up for Oscar week at the Film Group:

• Wed 13 Mar @ 8 PM: ARGO

A CIA specialist (Ben Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to extract American hostages from Iran: by posing as a film crew for a fake sci-fi movie. Winner of 3 Academy Awards in 2013, including Best Picture.

• Thu 14 Mar @ 8 PM: SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOKLIFE OF PI followed by THE SESSIONS

Winner of 4 Academy Awards, including Best Director (Ang Lee), LIFE OF PI follows a young man who survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. Then, in THE SESSIONS, a paralysed man (John Hawkes) who wishes to lose his virginity seeks out a professional sex surrogate (Helen Hunt in her Oscar-nominated role) for help.

• Sat 16 Mar @ **7 PM**: BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD followed by ON THE ROAD

In the Oscar-nominated BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, a six-year-old girl sets out from her magical community to find her long-lost mother. Then, in the star-studded film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's ON THE ROAD, three friends travel across the country and encounter people who impact their journey indelibly.

ARGO Re-screening on Wednesday 13 March

As its original screening was a full house screening, ARGO will be re-screened next week on Wednesday 13 March at 8 PM.

This makes for a very exciting week that will feature four of this year's Oscar nominees for Best Picture in a row! Eventual winner ARGO kicks the week off on Wednesday, with fellow nominees SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, LIFE OF PI and BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD following on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Please also note that, as was the case with its original screening, our re-screening of ARGO will also be a ‘No Guests’ screening.

Door Opening Times + What's On This Week

5th March, 2013

From this week onwards, doors will only open for entry into screenings 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the film (7:30 PM, or 6:30 PM for Saturday screenings). You’re welcome to come along earlier if you wish, but please be aware that you may not be allowed entry into the theatre until half an hour before the film.

As for what's on at the Film Group this week, there’s a little something for everyone, from action films (END OF WATCH, GANGSTER SQUAD) and comedies (PITCH PERFECT, THIS IS 40) to an Oscar-winning classic (BONNIE AND CLYDE) and the latest film from director Paul Thomas Anderson (THE MASTER).

• Tue 5 Mar @ 8 PM: END OF WATCH

The daily grind of two young police officers in L.A. (Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña) in interrupted when they stumble upon a cache of cash and firearms.

• Thu 7 Mar @ 8 PM: THE MASTER

A Naval veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) arrives home from WWII unsettled and uncertain of his future, until he is tantalised by a cult and its charismatic leader (Phillip Seymour Hoffman). Nominated for 3 Academy Awards in 2013, including Best Actor (Phoenix).

• Fri 8 Mar @ 8 PM: GANGSTER SQUAD followed by BONNIE AND CLYDE

In GANGSTER SQUAD, two detectives (Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling) lead a secret crew of L.A. police officers in an effort to take down the ruthless mob king who runs the city (Sean Penn). Then, in the classic BONNIE AND CLYDE, a bank robber and a bored small-town girl embark on an escalating crime-spree of robbery and murder.

• Sat 9 Mar @ **7 PM**: PITCH PERFECT followed by THIS IS 40

In PITCH PERFECT, a university freshman who is cajoled into joining her school's all-girls singing group, as they take on their male rivals in a competition. Then, a married couple (Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann) find themselves both turning 40 and are not happy about it in THIS IS 40, the semi-sequel to KNOCKED UP.

ARGO Full House Screening

Tonight's screening of ARGO was declared a full house at approximately 7:55 PM.

In accordance with our re-screening policy, if all the seats in the theatre fill up before 8 PM, the film will be re-screened. As this was the case tonight, ARGO will be re-screened at a later date and time to be advised.

• Sat 2 Mar @ **7 PM**: SKYFALL followed by ROBOT AND FRANK

Encore screening of the billion-dollar blockbuster (and freshly minted double Oscar winner) SKYFALL: the 23rd film in the James Bond franchise sees 007’s loyalty to M tested when MI6 comes under attack. Then, in the quirky sci-fi comedy ROBOT AND FRANK, an aging thief uses his robot butler to return to a life of crime.

Canberra Premiere: TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE

Our second week of screenings begins with an exclusive Canberra premiere screening of Clint Eastwood’s latest film: TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE screening this Tuesday at 8 PM.

Despite getting a theatrical release around the country, Canberra missed out on this baseball drama -- dubbed by some as the anti-MONEYBALL -- when it was first released, so here’s your chance to be among the first in town to check it out!

Here’s what’s on at the Film Group for the week:

• Tue 19 Feb @ 8 PM: TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE

An ailing baseball scout (Clint Eastwood) takes his daughter (Amy Adams) along for one last recruiting trip in an effort to prove his worth. Also starring Justin Timberlake and John Goodman.

• Thu 21 Feb @ 8 PM: THE INTOUCHABLES

The heart-warming, true story of a quadriplegic French aristocrat who hires an underprivileged and unqualified young man to be his caretaker.

• Fri 22 Feb @ 8 PM: THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

A young Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) embarks on a quest with Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) and a group of Dwarves to reclaim their mountain home from a dragon.

• Sat 23 Feb @ **7 PM**: WRECK-IT RALPH followed by 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

In the Oscar-nominated WRECK-IT RALPH, a video game villain desperately dreams of one day becoming a hero. Then, revisit the beloved high school comedy 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, starring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Thanks to Hoyts Distribution, we have five double passes to give away to the upcoming crime thriller BROKEN CITY, starring Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

In the film, an ex-cop turned private detective (Wahlberg) is hired by the Mayor of New York (Crowe) to tail his wife (Zeta-Jones). But when he finds himself double-crossed and framed in a city-wide conspiracy, he sets out to seek redemption and revenge.
