In a desperate attempt to get himself out of a financial jam, mild-mannered Minnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) hires a pair of criminal lowlifes (Peter Stormare, Steve Buscemi) to kidnap his wife and demand a ransom from her wealthy father. Or at least that’s the plan – but it’s not long before their inept bungling leaves three people dead. Soon, heavily pregnant local police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) begins diligently investigating the murders, as Jerry hopelessly attempts to cover his tracks.
Released in 1996, this quirky and hilarious crime comedy quickly became the Coen Brothers’ biggest hit to date. It went on to win two Oscars, including McDormand’s first Best Actress trophy, and has even recently spawned an acclaimed TV spin-off series set in the same continuity. So, is this macabre indie classic worth revisiting again on the big screen for its 30th anniversary? You betcha!

In the 72 hours leading up to D-Day in June 1944, the entire fate of the free world hangs in a fragile balance. General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) is tasked with making the ultimate call on launching the allied invasion of Normandy and turning the tide of the WWII. The only person standing in his way is Captain James Stagg (Andrew Scott), the Scottish chief meteorologist who forecasts a disastrous storm over the English Channel, contradicting optimistic forecasts from rival American meteorologists. As Stagg strongly advises delaying the massive invasion, Eisenhower faces a harrowing choice: launch the largest amphibious assault in history or risk losing the entire war effort.
Australian director Anthony Maras (Hotel Mumbai) helms this tense historical thriller, capturing the claustrophobic anxiety behind military decision-making. With a powerhouse cast including Damian Lewis, Chris Messina and Kerry Condon, Pressure delivers a dramatic look at leadership under immense, well, pressure.
