This compelling Australian documentary takes viewers inside the hidden world of animal experimentation in scientific research facilities. The film focuses on Dr Lisa Jones-Engel, a respected primatologist who transformed into a dedicated animal welfare advocate after witnessing the systemic harm inflicted on laboratory primates. Through unflinching access and emotional interviews, the narrative exposes the physical and psychological toll endured not only by the caged test subjects, but also by the lab technicians and researchers tasked with conducting these invasive procedures. By contrasting scientific ambitions against ethical responsibilities, Sentient raises urgent, uncomfortable questions about whether society can still justify causing profound suffering to animals and humans in the name of medical progress.

Directed and written by veteran Australian journalist Tony Jones alongside Rachel Grierson-Johns, this thought-provoking feature premiered in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
