When an aggressive drilling operation causes a catastrophic blowout on a Greenland ice rig, ruthless oil tycoon Digger Rockwell (Tom Cruise) suddenly finds himself in the middle of an unprecedented, possibly apocalyptic environmental crisis. Rather than alerting global authorities, the megalomaniacal billionaire, aided by the President of the United States (John Goodman), attempts to manipulate the impending disaster into a lucrative financial windfall. Meanwhile, his personal attention remains strangely consumed by the declining health of his prized pedigree cat.
Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the master filmmaker behind Birdman, The Revenant and Amores Perros, this controversial darkly satirical black comedy represents a bold cinematic departure for a near-unrecognisable Tom Cruise. Drawing comparison to dark cinematic classics like Dr. Strangelove, critics have been starkly divided, with some lauding its sharp political satire and apocalyptic humour, while others... have been less kind. Which side will you end up on?
