In June 1940, as France capitulates under Nazi occupation, newly appointed Brigadier General Charles de Gaulle (Simon Abkarian) refuses to accept national defeat. Escaping to London, the defiant officer launches the Free French movement from exile. De Gaulle clashes with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Simon Russell Beale) to assert French independence while striving to unite fragmented underground resistance networks across Europe and North Africa. Through a series of historic BBC radio broadcasts, he endeavours to ignite a spirit of national liberation.

Helmed by Antonin Baudry, this grand French historical epic presents an engrossing portrait of wartime determination. Critics have lauded the sharp verbal sparring between Abkarian and Beale, which brings magnetic human intensity to high-stakes diplomatic negotiations, setting it apart from other, recent De Gaulle biopics. This is also a tale so epic that it needed two parts to tell, with De Gaulle: Liberté scheduled for release in Australia in April 2027.
