During the American Civil War, railroad engineer Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton) faces rejection when he tries to enlist in the Confederate army. Deemed too valuable in his civilian role, he is branded a coward by his beloved Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack). However, when Union spies hijack his cherished locomotive – nicknamed The General – with Annabelle trapped aboard, Johnnie embarks on a daring, single-handed rescue mission across enemy lines.

Co-directed by Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman, this silent 1926 masterpiece features some of the most dangerous and intricate physical stunts ever captured on celluloid. Though initially a commercial disappointment, it is now celebrated by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest comedies ever made.
