During the final, tumultuous weeks of World War II, twelve-year-old Nanning Bohm (Jasper Billerbeck) is forced to grow up quickly. Having escaped the devastating firebombing of Hamburg, the young boy works the harsh potato fields of a secluded North Sea island to support his pregnant mother, Hille Hagener (Laura Tonke), who remains a fanatical Nazi supporter. When news of Adolf Hitler’s death plunges his mother into a catatonic depression, Nanning must navigate a dangerous black market to barter for rare food and medicine. Through these desperate transactions, he uncovers the grim reality of his family's ideological choices.

Acclaimed filmmaker Fatih Akin directs this poignant historical drama, co-writing the script with his mentor Hark Bohm, who based the story directly on his own wartime childhood. Beautiful in both a narrative and aesthetic manner, this German production has been celebrated since its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
