Surviving the horrors of the Vietnam War leaves lonely insomniac Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) adrift in a decaying, crime-ridden New York City. To pass his sleepless nights, he takes a job driving a yellow cab, witnessing the city's worst moral rot firsthand. Disillusioned and mentally deteriorating, Travis develops an unrequited obsession with campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd) before pivoting his violent, vigilante impulses toward saving a young prostitute named Iris (newcomer Jodie Foster) from her predatory pimp.
