In the brutal heat of 1932 Central Australia, Aboriginal siblings Max and Kid find themselves exploited to dig tungsten – also known as 'wolfram' – from the unforgiving earth. When their cruel captor suddenly dies, Max is abducted by a pair of ruthless outlaws (Erroll Shand, Natassia Gorey-Furber). This leaves Kid to embark on a desperate pursuit across the unforgiving desert. Along the way, they encounter Philomac (Gibson John), an older man whose past intersections with colonial forces mirror their own struggle. Together, they seize a fragile opportunity to escape their pursuers under the cover of night, eventually crossing paths with a mother (Deborah Mailman) consumed by the ache of her own stolen children.
Directed by Warwick Thornton, this powerful Australian Western serves as a direct sequel to his acclaimed 2017 masterpiece, Sweet Country. It features the return of Philomac, now grown, and draws deeply from the personal family history of the film's writers. With breathtaking cinematography and stirring performances from the diverse cast, Wolfram offers an uncompromising look at a harrowing chapter of Australian history that deserves your attention.
