Reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman (Adam Scott) travels to a remote, windswept seaside inn in Ireland with a singular, sombre purpose: to scatter his parents' ashes. His quest for closure is interrupted by the inn's staff, who recount a terrifying local legend concerning a witch said to haunt the very honeymoon suite where he is staying. As Ohm’s grief resurfaces, the boundary between his psychological torment and the supernatural folklore begins to blur. He soon finds himself plagued by fragments of a past he thought he had buried, leading to an inevitable confrontation with a darkness that is far more than just a ghost story.
Directed by Damian McCarthy, following the breakout success of his horror hit Oddity, Hokum is a masterclass in atmosphere and suspense. Starring Adam Scott in a rare, intense genre role, the film and its use of practical effects has cemented McCarthy's reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in modern Irish horror.
