In 1937, at the height of Joseph Stalin’s Great Purge of political dissenters, thousands of letters from falsely accused detainees of the Soviet Union are burned, never to see the light of day. Against all odds, one such desperate plea reaches its destination: the desk of a newly appointed and idealistic local prosecutor, Alexander Kornyev (Aleksandr Kuznetsov). Discovering increasing evidence of wrongful convictions and brutal treatment of Bolsheviks, Kornyev risks his life to investigate corruption within the NKVD, the Soviet secret police – a quest for justice which will take him all the way to the office of the powerful Prosecutor General in Moscow.
Two Prosecutors is a haunting historical drama which meticulously depicts the terrifying banality of bureaucratic evil. Kornyev’s journey into the heart of a corrupt, self-devouring system proves to be a powerful, bleak warning from history that is intensely relevant today.
