In a 1980s New York City populated by animals, a solitary Dog builds himself a robot companion to fill the void of loneliness. Their friendship blossoms into a beautiful bond as they share joyous adventures across the vibrant cityscape, from subway rides to roller-skating escapades in Central Park. But things take an unexpected turn during a beach outing when a malfunction leaves Dog separated from his beloved Robot.

Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger directs this enchanting, wordless Oscar-nominated animated masterpiece based on Sara Varon’s 2007 graphic novel. Don’t let the simplistic-yet-gorgeous 2D animation or the non-human characters put you off: it’s an achingly bittersweet story of love and loss that has been hailed as one of the best films in recent years. Children will be suitably entertained, but grown-ups will want to bring tissues.

Experience the cinematic brilliance of Akira Kurosawa's groundbreaking masterpiece, one of the greatest films ever made, newly restored and back on the big screen at the ANU Film Group as it celebrates its 75th anniversary.

This revolutionary psychological thriller shattered narrative conventions, presenting a single incident – the murder of a samurai – through the strikingly different testimonies of four witnesses. Each testimony unfolds through striking imagery and an ingenious use of flashbacks, highlighting the subjectivity of memory and the self-serving nature of human perception.

Rashōmon’s innovative non-linear narrative structure and its timeless exploration of the elusive nature of truth has cemented its place as a landmark achievement in cinema. In addition to being credited with introducing Japanese cinema to the West, it has influenced generations of filmmakers and inspired countless films.
