PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EMBASSY OF IRELAND
In 1985 Ireland, Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) is a soft-spoken father of five who has built up his coal business through years of hard work. As Christmas approaches, Bill makes a delivery to the local convent’s laundry and uncovers a shocking secret hidden within his seemingly ordinary town. Haunted by his own past, Bill must confront a moral dilemma: to stay complicitly silent or risk everything by speaking out against the powerful Roman Catholic Church, led by the icy Mother Superior Sister Mary (Emily Watson).
Following his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy returns home to Ireland for this deeply moving and quietly devastating drama. Based on the celebrated novel by Claire Keegan, it explores Ireland’s notorious Magdalene Laundries, where tens of thousands of unwed young mothers were abused, while examining the age-old question of how good people let bad things happen.
