Longing to experience romance again after becoming recently widowed, rebellious 70-year-old Mahin (Lily Farhadpour) shakes up her daily routine with the aim of meeting a man. Her efforts pay off when she crosses paths with cab driver Faramarz (Esmaeel Mehrabi), who like Mahin, has recently run afoul of oppressive Iranian authorities. Their chance encounter leads to an unforgettable evening when she offers to bake him her favourite cake.

Much like its protagonists, the two directors of My Favourite Cake have also been victims of their government: they were prevented from travelling to Berlin to attend their own premiere, and their film was confiscated when their production offices were raided. It’s a poignant juxtaposition to this charming, tender film about standing up for what you believe in, and rediscovering joy in a world that often tries to suppress it.

Autistic maths savant Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) was once the go-to forensic accountant for the criminal underworld – who also moonlighted as a deadly assassin – until a job gone wrong forced him on the run. Now, eight years later, Christian’s unique skills are called upon once again when an old acquaintance is found dead with a message on his arm: ‘Find the accountant’. Enlisting the help of his estranged brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal), Christian must solve the puzzle while staying one step ahead of killers who will stop at nothing to protect their secrets.

This long-gestating sequel to the 2016 sleeper hit ups the ante with more adrenaline-pumping action, convoluted conspiracies and the dynamite pairing of Affleck and Bernthal. You don’t need to be a genius to see that it all adds up to a fun night at the movies.
