Written and co-directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Warfare plunges viewers into a raw, visceral depiction of modern combat. Set in 2006 as a platoon of U.S. Navy SEALs find themselves ambushed during a surveillance mission, this re-enactment draws solely from the memories of those who lived it, including Mendoza, to deliver an immensely effective anti-war statement.
Aided by who’s who of Hollywood up-and-comers – including Will Poulter, Joseph Quinn, Noah Centineo, Michael Gandolfini and Cosmo Jarvis – Warfare’s strength lies in its absence of sentimentality, abandoning movie tropes that typically make war look attractive. Shot in real-time and with gripping sound design and cinematography, the film is a stark reminder of the devastating realities of war, and a powerful tribute to brotherhood forged in conflict.
