In 1932, twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) return home to Mississippi after years of running with gangsters in Chicago. Deciding to use their amassed funds to open a juke joint, they set out to recruit a crew of blues musicians, including gifted young cousin Sammie (newcomer Miles Caton). But not all is as it seems in their hometown: as the sun goes down, a dark, supernatural evil reveals itself and transforms the club’s opening night into a fight for survival.
Director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) reunites with five-time collaborator Jordan for this rare original blockbuster – a riveting, blood-soaked allegory on race, colonialism, the shadow of slavery and the escapist power of music. It’s a unique mash-up, but in Coogler’s talented hands, makes for a gorgeous, blues-drenched cinematic experience.
