After being sheltered from the human world for years, four teenage mutant turtles – Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael – set out to win the hearts of their fellow New Yorkers by becoming heroes. With the aid of aspiring journalist April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), they soon find themselves taking on a mysterious syndicate run by a criminal known as ‘Superfly’ (Ice Cube).

Mutant Mayhem may be the seventh film to feature the heroes in a half shell since they first debuted in comic form nearly 40 years ago, but it’s a testament to the film’s inventiveness that everything still feels fresh and exciting. Drawing inspiration from the scruffy look of the Spider-Verse films, and with spectacular voice work from an all-star cast including Jackie Chan, Paul Rudd and John Cena, this inspired tale of adolescent outsiders seeking acceptance is a surprise and delight for all ages.

Over a decade before anyone had heard of an iPhone, Canadian engineering graduates Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) and Doug Fregin (Matt Johnson) produce an interactive device with the ability to send and receive emails. After the mismatched duo realise that they lack the skills to sell their revolutionary new invention to the world, they make a deal with Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton), a cutthroat marketing man who has just lost his job with another tech company. As money rolls in and their company’s fortunes soar, the stakes grow higher and the fun gradually disappears, edged out by competitiveness and greed.

Unless you’ve got a BlackBerry in your pocket, you probably have some idea of how the story ends. But this is nevertheless a wildly entertaining, bitingly funny account of the spectacular rise – and catastrophic demise – of the world’s first smartphone.
