Fahrije (Yllka Gashi) and the other women of her Albanian-speaking village struggle to provide for their families after their husbands go missing during the war in Kosovo. When she convinces the women to band together to make and sell a traditional capsicum relish, Fahrije faces strong hostility from the remaining men of the village. As the women’s hopes of ever seeing their husbands again fade, they must fight for their only hope of a future.

Based on a true story, Hive won the most awards of any film at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and was the first ever to win all three main awards – the Grand Jury Prize, the Audience Award and the Directing Award – in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition. Not surprisingly, it is also Kosovo’s entry for this year’s Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
