Forced by an armed conflict to flee her village, Alma Madrigal (María Cecilia Botero) and her infant triplets are – by a miracle – granted a magical house in the hills of Colombia in which they can seek refuge. It soon transpires that the house is not the only thing that is magical: each descendant of the ever-growing Madrigal family is blessed with a unique gift – all except for the extremely ordinary Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the house may be losing its magic after 50 years, Mirabel learns that she may be her exceptional family’s last hope.

It may be the 60th feature film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, but Encanto is more than your stock standard Disney fairy tale. From a fresh South American cultural perspective, the film touches on powerful themes such as familial trauma, wrapped up in terrific original songs from songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana, Hamilton).

Nominated for 3 Oscars in 2022, including Best Animated Feature.

The full title of this film is The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun and the eponymous dispatch is a magazine based in the fictional 20th-century French city of Ennui-sur-Blasé. After its editor Arthur Howitzer (Bill Murray) suddenly dies, his will states that magazine must finish up, but not before releasing one final farewell issue. The rest of the film brings to life a collection of stories published in that issue in a series of intricately constructed vignettes.

Full of zany characters, the star-studded cast includes Frances McDormand, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Benicio Del Toro, Timothée Chalamet, Léa Seydoux, Elizabeth Moss, Owen Wilson, Jeffrey Wright, Christoph Waltz and many, many more. Trust us, you could play Hollywood Bingo with this one.

A loving ode to the spirit of journalism, The French Dispatch can be a little hard to follow, but fans of comedic mayhem and Wes Anderson's idiosyncratic style won’t be disappointed.
