Peter Mortimer’s new documentary, The Alpinist, follows on in the tradition of the Oscar-winning Free Solo with its nail-biting, rope-less solo ascents of sheer imposing mountain faces and jaw-dropping scenery. The alpinist in question is a free-spirited 23-year-old Canadian, Marc-André Leclerc. Nomadic and publicity shy, he doesn't own a phone or car, and is reluctant to let a film crew disturb his pure ideal of climbing. Luckily for us, Leclerc eventually allows Mortimer to tag along as he embarks on a historic adventure in Patagonia that will redefine what is possible in solo climbing.

Featuring interviews with other climbers, including Free Solo star Alex Honnold, The Alpinist combines breathtaking adventure with a thought-provoking portrayal of a truly unique individual. A must-see on the big screen.

When provocative stand-up comedian Henry (Adam Driver) falls in love with opera star Ann (Marion Cotillard), it’s not long before they become the perfect showbiz couple. Their bond is tested when his career starts to dip and hers starts to rise, but it all takes a very unexpected turn when their daughter, Annette, is born. Mostly because she happens to be a wooden puppet.

No, that’s not a typo. But it’s just the tip of the iceberg of this farcical fantasy which won French auteur Leos Carax (Holy Motors) the Best Director honours at the 2021 Cannes Festival. And have we mentioned that the entire film plays out in song as a glorious rock opera? Yep, this spellbinding film is unlike any other you’ll see this year – or any year, for that matter.
