Membership Services

How do I join the Film Group?

Membership of the Film Group is open to everyone. While the group is based at the ANU, you don't have to have any affiliation with the Australian National University in order to join the Film Group. All you need is a desire to watch films in a cinema environment for an excellent price!

You are able to join the Film Group at any of our screenings. All you need to do is turn up to the theatre (location information here) during the hour before the scheduled start time and sign up.

We have three types of membership - semester, annual and weekly.

We are really excited about our new Weekly membership. This is great for those of you are unsure about the quality of the Films we show. After just one screening we're sure you'll agree that we have one of the best cinemas in Canberra.

The Group only has the facilities to accept cash payments. There are ATM facilities on the university if you get to the theatre and don't have the cash on you, but it is handy to check your wallet or purse first.

If you have lost or forgotten your Membership Card

When you buy your membership your details are entered into our Membership database (don't worry, all your details are protected by privacy legislation!) and so if you don't bring your membership card we are still able to look you up on our database - it just takes us a little bit longer than simply scanning your card.

If you have looked everywhere for your card and it is definitely lost then we will be issue you will a replacement card, you just need to fill in a form available from the Duty Manager. But remember, your cards are not able to be used by anyone else, and if someone is found with your card then it will be confiscated.

Guest Passes

Electronic guest passes are provided with semester and annual memberships:

Note that Weekly memberships do not include guest passes

Each pass allows the member the bring an invited guest to a screening with them at no cost to either person. These passes can not be used at any screening marked as Members Only. If you would like to check how many guest passes you have remaining on your membership, just as the Duty Manager at any screening.

Free Laminating

Another service we offer for the benefit of both our members is a free laminating service for your membership card. When we have enough Committee members at a screening you will see us seated at the desk below the screen during the hour before the scheduled start time of the film. While it is pretty busy at the beginning of each Semester, after a few weeks of screenings this can be quite a lonely place to be, so please come down and get your card laminated. It provides great protection for your card and it will still fit in your wallet or purse...and it's completely free!

Lost Property

The Film Group has a small cupboard for any property found at the end of a screening. So if you think you have left something when you went home then check with the Duty Manager or send us an email and we will let you know if we have found it. If the item is something of value or may need to be returned as a priority, the item will be left with the night watchman at the Coombs building for safe keeping. The night watchman is located just inside the main doors of the Coombs building, where the turning circle is, and is available 24 hours a day.

Mailing List

While we make an effort to advise members of new or important things via announcements at screenings and with signs at the theatre, the best way to keep updated with our latest news is to join our mailing list. We have a newsletter that roughly goes out each fortnight if there are things to say, but probably most importantly, if there are changes to the programme, including extra screenings, then we will email this information to you. So if you want to join the mailing list then just click here. The front page of the website will also have up to date changes.
